As we come up on my wedding date a year ago I am flooded with the memories and the insanity of that one particular day.
It was one of the hottest days of the year. I had insisted on being a June bride, understanding that this could have been a possibility and yet sucked into the hallmark concept of June. I can blame it most likely on my yearly overdose of Hallmark Christmas movies. Regardless I insisted June 17th, 2017 was the perfect day to be married. It was easy to remember and it was a Saturday in June.
The venue we had reserved was well within our small budget, as they claim the average wedding cost is 40k... ours was a sliver of that. It was a small little old country club with a big space. A nice big space where we could set up however we wanted. Everything was fine until we got there the day before to set up. What we did not know at the time and the venue failed to mention was that the copper had been stripped out of their air conditioning unit... there was no ac in the building at all.... There was a heat advisory and it was 100 degrees outside on my wedding day.
There were tears, I won't deny it. These giant robot machines were brought in as an attempt to cool the location. They looked more like something out of Star Trek rather than fine wedding decorations...looking back I should have put flowers on them to jazz them up a bit.
The night before I admit I was a mess. I knew it was unbearably hot in the venue and we had family all over in town, with our small budget there was nothing to be done. My amazing friend Jessica secretly called my husband and told him to come see me at the hotel I was staying at because I was a disaster. I had too many concerns about everyone's opinions or thoughts, that I was inviting them to a sauna and not a wedding. My dress had about 8 layers and of course the guys had hot tuxes. I remember walking out of the hotel to meet him convinced this could not happen, that we would have to postpone or run to a church or anything and I was not ok and then... I saw him.
I swear that the world stopped. It did for me. I instantly knew that the only thing I needed in this world was him. While I was still upset at the venue and the situation, none of it mattered because it was him, him I needed. I will never forget the moment I saw him walking toward me. I will never forget the love and relief I felt just at the sight of him.
The wedding went on. We had a wonderful friend to officiate the wedding and the most wonderful DJ of all time. Understand it was about 90 degrees in this venue and he had everybody and I mean everybody dancing. If you are ever in need of a DJ in Kansas City, please consider Levity Events. Derek is the most wonderful and talented of people and a true unsung hero on my wedding day.
It was beautiful... It was hot but it was beautiful. Our amazing photographer pulled off our pictures not looking like we were covered in sweat which we were, and I married the man of my dreams.
Cheers to the hottest couple in Kansas City ;)
